The Washington Wizards have waived guard Ron Baker shortly after he was acquired after being waived by the New York Knicks earlier this season, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Baker had yet to reach three full weeks with his new team before the organization chose to part ways with him prior to the 5 p.m. ET deadline on Jan. 7 that would make his contract fully guaranteed.

The Wizards will incur a $170,915 cap hit once his waiver becomes official, putting their tax bill at $8.66 million, a figure that will likely increase once the 14th roster spot is filled, according to ESPN Insider Bobby Marks.

Washington will need to get to a minimum of 14 players within the next two weeks to concur with league rules.

In this case, Baker's release is a matter of preference, given the Wizards' poor chances of reaching the playoffs after a rough start to the season and a season-ending injury to All-Star point guard John Wall, which make it all the more tougher to recover from.
