The Washington Wizards sent “multiple people” to Australia to scout LaMelo Ball in the NBL this season, per Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington.

Washington has John Wall and Bradley Beal at the point guard and shooting guard spots, respectively, but that didn't stop the Wizards from doing some due diligence on LaMelo. In fact, they even hired a full-time scout based in the area to assess LaMelo.

The Wizards did their due diligence on Ball this season, sending multiple people to Australia to scout him in-person as well as hiring a scout based full-time in the area, NBC Sports Washington was told. With Ball and also R.J. Hampton in that region, the NBA scouting map has expanded and the Wizards had good timing with their front office overhaul last summer. They beefed up their international scouting capabilities and were prepared for covering more ground across the globe.

LaMelo Ball played 12 games in the NBL before suffering a foot injury. He averaged 17.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists.

The Wizards will get Wall back next season. The All-Star guard was set to miss the entire 2019-20 campaign rehabbing from his Achilles' tear.

In 2018-19, Wall averaged 20.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game for the Wizards before suffering his heel injury. The former No. 1 overall then fell at his house, tearing his Achilles in the process.

In the small-ball era, it would be intriguing to watch the Wizards throw out a lineup of Wall, Beal and Ball. Washington will likely have a good pick in the 2020 draft. They were only 24-40 on the season before COVID-19 forced the NBA to suspend play.
