As the WNBA has increased in popularity, so has the league’s creativity and innovation. The Commissioner’s Cup is one such example. The event, presented by Coinbase, is an annual WNBA in-season tournament. It adds an extra flare to the league, which serves as extra incentive for players and increased interest for fans.

This will be the fourth iteration of Commissioner’s Cup, as it was supposed to start during the 2020 season, but it was delayed until 2021 because of COVID-19. Last year, we got a sneak peek of the WNBA Finals in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship, as the New York Liberty took on the Las Vegas Aces. However, unlike the Finals, the Liberty walked out victorious.

Every WNBA team competes for a $500,000 prize prize pool and an additional $120,000 in cryptocurrency, as well as a chance to hold the Commissioner’s Cup Trophy.

Commissioner’s Cup format

All 12 WNBA teams compete in the Commissioner’s Cup. Each team will play five games in the tournament, one against each of their conference opponents. The games are played over a two-week period from June 1-13. The games will count towards a team’s overall record, and the team from each conference with the best record in Commissioner’s Cup games will advance to the Commissioner’s Cup Championship. The two teams in the championship game will play on June 25 for a chance to win the tournament and the prizes that come with it.

The format differs from that of previous seasons. Previously, the Commissioner’s Cup was spread out across half of the WNBA season. The new format is intended to create a heightened sense of urgency and more of an emphasis on the tournament itself in comparison to most regular season games.
