Michigan Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard agreed to terms on a new five-year contract on Tuesday. His fourth-ranked Wolverines then went out and suffered a stunning 67-65 home loss to Seton Hall, capping off a roller-coaster ride of a day for the men's basketball program.

Howard's new deal takes him through the 2025-26 season. The Wolverines head coach released this statement on the contract, via ESPN's Jeff Borzello:

“I'm honored to be regarded in such a way that the University wished to continue a lasting relationship with me,” Howard said. “It was a surprise when Warde [Manuel] approached me, and it didn't take long for us to get on the same page. I'm grateful to him, our great University and my talented young men who sacrifice every day. The love I have for the University of Michigan is beyond words.”

Howard was singing a different tune after the Wolverines blew an 11-point second-half lead to lose on their home floor against Seton Hall. The head coach got brutally honest on what his team must learn from the loss, per Isaiah Hole of Wolverines Wire:

“Fundamentally, we’ve gotta do a better job of taking care of the basketball. It’s a learning process for all of us as a whole. Not singling out one individual out. Everyone as a team, coaches included.”

Michigan's offense went into a rut down the stretch, scoring just 10 points in the last 8:49 after a 3-pointer put them up 55-46. Wolverines star Hunter Dickinson didn't attempt a single shot during that long stretch to close the game, just taking and making a pair of free throws.

Howard was baffled by this after Dickinson played so well to start the game:

“I have no idea. I don’t really know, honestly. I’ll go back and take a look at the film.”

Michigan will surely bounce back, but this was a shocking loss at the start of the NCAA men's basketball season.
