Yasiel Puig is headed east. We’re not talking about an MLB division here, but east as in the eastern hemisphere. That’s after it was announced that the former major leaguer has been signed by the Kiwoom Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization to a one-year deal, according to Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News Agency.

Yasiel Puig is coming to #KBO after all. The Kiwoom Heroes have signed Puig to a 1-yr, $1 million contract (maximum amount for 1st-year foreign players), source tells my colleague at Yonhap. The club's official announcement expected soon.

It’s been a while since Puig last played in the majors. He most recently suited up in the MLB for the Cleveland Indians in 2019, where he was traded by the Cincinnati Reds in the same year. That season, Puig appeared in 149 games and slashed .267/.327/.458 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs.

But between his stint with the Indians and his upcoming tour of duty for Kiwoom, Puig was able to take part in the 2021 season of the Mexican League. Puig, who had just turned 31 on Tuesday, batted .312/.409/.517 in 247 plate appearances and 62 games for the El Águila de Veracruz.

Puig is hoping that would still be able to return to the big leagues, so it’s paramount for him to put up great numbers in South Korea to keep his name on the radars of MLB teams.
