The XCOM franchise will be expanding onto the free-to-play mobile market with XCOM: Legends. A new studio, Iridium Starfish, will be developing the game. The official Google Play Store page describes the game as a “mobile turn-based RPG”. XCOM: Legends will feature a campaign mode and PVP modes. Additionally, players may deploy 5 heroes at a time per battle. The page also states the game's setting and main premise:

“Twenty years have passed since Earth surrendered to the alien invaders. By the time we realized the alien threat, the war was already over and humanity was lost. To exterminate the last of the resistance fighters, the aliens have unleashed an untold, ancient evil.

We now need your help once again, Commander, to assemble XCOM’s greatest warriors, both past and present and take back Earth. Are you ready?”

In an interview with PC GamesN, 2K confirmed XCOM: Legends as an official entry into the franchise. They said: “We are constantly exploring and testing new experiences to offer our fans the best entertainment and value,” and that they have “soft-launched XCOM Legends in limited territories.”

However, longtime fans of XCOM should expect XCOM: Legends to be a wholly different experienced from the turn-based tactics they're used to. XCOM: Legends comes with all the trappings of modern mobile games – microtransactions abound. There will be a premium ticket for faster recruitment and gacha-like mechanics for RNG-based hero acquisition.

This isn't the XCOM 3 announcement most were hoping for, nor is it a follow-up to the more narrative-heavy XCOM: Chimera Squad. This has ruffled a few feathers, but time will tell whether that will affect the game's success.
