Compared to the other awards in the NFL, the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year award has seen different positions prevail. Just this past season, Nick Bosa of the San Francisco 49ers was the logical choice after logging nine sacks and 25 quarterback hits as a rookie.

Over the past 10 seasons, there has been a variety of different positions to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. Altogether, since 2010, there have been three edge rushers, three interior defenders, two linebackers, and two cornerbacks to win the award.

Given that Chase Young was taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, coupled with the fact that edge rushers are more valuable than ever, Young is the odds-on favorite to take home the hardware. However, could one of the other defensive rookies slip under the radar next season?

In light of that, here are three dark horse candidates to win the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2020.

3. Willie Gay Jr.

Current odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year: +2500 (according to Bovada)

As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs haven't had an active offseason thus far, partly due to their current financial situation. Altogether, the Chiefs were able to retain 20 of their 22 starters from a season ago.

However, one of the two starters they lost in free agency was Reggie Ragland. But in the 2020 NFL Draft, Kansas City replaced Ragland when they took Willie Gay Jr. with the No. 63 pick in the second round.

During his time at Mississippi State, Gay flashed a ton of upside as a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. Meanwhile, he also excelled in coverage situations and has room for improvement in that area of his game. Seeing that he could be a starter in Steve Spagnuolo's defense, Gay could surprise some people in 2020.

2. Trevon Diggs

Current odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year: +3500 (according to Bovada)

The Dallas Cowboys entered the offseason with a handful of marquee names that could depart in free agency. Instead of retaining Byron Jones or Robert Quinn, the Cowboys prioritized re-signing Amari Cooper and placing their franchise tag on Dak Prescott.

With Jones no longer manning the No. 1 cornerback spot, Dallas has a ton of question marks at the position. After grabbing CeeDee Lamb with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cowboys added Trevon Diggs in the second round.

Diggs, a wide-receiver-turned-cornerback at Alabama, posted eight pass breakups, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries in 2019. Considering he'll always be in the spotlight playing for the Cowboys, Diggs could make a name for himself as a rookie next season.

1. C.J. Henderson

Current odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year: +3500 (according to Bovada)

Entering the 2020 NFL Draft, the consensus choice for the No. 1 cornerback available was Jeffrey Okudah. Besides Okudah, C.J. Henderson was another cornerback receiving some early first-round buzz as the draft neared.

After Okudah went off the board with the No. 3 pick by the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars made Henderson the second cornerback selected with the No. 9 pick. Upon joining the Jaguars, Henderson will be tasked with helping fill the voids that are left behind by the exits of Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye in the past year.

Throughout his time at Florida, Henderson excelled in man coverage, accounting for 20 pass breakups and six interceptions in his three collegiate seasons.

While Jacksonville may not be a contender in 2020, Henderson should have an opportunity to be an immediate impact player for the Jaguars.
