In a great game at Lambeau Field on Saturday night, the San Francisco 49ers eliminated the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Playoffs on a last-second field goal by Robbie Gould. Although most analysts had the Packers winning, the 49ers used their great defense, timely special teams plays and some horrid mistakes by the Packers to take another step toward the Super Bowl with their 13-10 win.

While Jimmy Garoppolo and his offensive unit struggled again, this 49ers group is still a threat to win it all, despite their flaws. Here are two immediate takeaways from the 49ers' thrilling playoff victory over the Packers.

San Francisco 49ers Takeaways vs. Packers

1. 49ers' defense, special teams ruled the day

On a night where the offense got very little going, the 49ers' defense is proving to be elite. Last week, they played the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL in the Dallas Cowboys and held them to just 17 points. In this game, San Francisco shut down likely MVP Aaron Rodgers and the high-powered Packers offense after giving up an easy touchdown on the first drive.

Green Bay managed just three points the rest of the way, with Rodgers failing to throw a touchdown pass. He only completed two passes to players not named Davante Adams or Aaron Jones. The 49ers sacked Rodgers five times, with Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead both notching two sacks apiece. San Francisco also forced a Marcedes Lewis fumble. Having Bosa and Fred Warner play after suffering injuries last week made a huge difference for this surging defense.

The 49ers' special teams unit also took advantage of the Packers' poor play in that area of the game, with three key plays standing out. The first was at the end of the first half with the Packers in field goal range after a killer Jimmy Garoppolo interception and a huge Rodgers pass play to Jones. Green Bay was ready to go up 10-0 heading into halftime, but then Jimmie Ward came out of nowhere to block Mason Crosby's field goal attempt.

The second play was in the fourth quarter when it looked like the 49ers were dead in the water. San Francisco blocked a punt after forcing a three-and-out with around five minutes left, and Talanoa Hufanga returned the block for a touchdown to tie the game.

The 49ers' defense then stood tall against Rodgers with another three-and-out, setting up the final key special teams play of the game: Gould's game-winning kick.

The offense did just enough to put Gould in position to win the game, and the trusty kicker cashed in the 45-yard boot to send San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game. It was his 20th career playoff field goal in that many attempts, which certifies him as a true legend of the sport.

With this defense playing at such a high level, the 49ers can win it all … but there are still some major concerns.

2. 49ers' offense was a train wreck  … which might spell trouble in the NFC Championship Game

San Francisco's offense was lost the whole game. Jimmy Garoppolo battled through his injuries once again, but he accomplished very little by completing just 11 out of 19 passes for 131 yards and one interception. Garoppolo could have easily thrown more interceptions, but the Packers failed to take advantage.

The 49ers' running game was solid but unspectacular, with Elijah Mitchell rushing the ball 17 times for 53 yards and Deebo Samuel racking up 39 yards on 10 carries. Samuel did have a clutch run late in the game to set up Gould's field goal, but this was overall a pedestrian performance by a normally elite ground unit.

While San Francisco has pulled off some miracles to get this far with a flawed offense, this might be trouble for them in the NFC Championship Game against either the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Los Angeles Rams.

To beat Tom Brady in the playoffs, Jimmy G will have to make more plays, especially considering the Buccaneers have an elite run defense. The same would likely be true against the Rams, though Matthew Stafford is no Brady. Garoppolo did play hero against Los Angeles in Week 18 to secure a playoff spot, so it's not out of the question to see it happen again, but there's simply no doubt he has to be better than he was against Green Bay.

Still, it would be foolish to count out the 49ers at this point. They have proven they can win huge games on the road against seemingly more talented teams. This is a dangerous squad that's creating a lot of their own luck, even if there are times where they also look incompetent.
