The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a huge blow on Sunday after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf injury against the Seattle Seahawks. With that, head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the need for the team to quickly integrate Trey Lance and make him comfortable running the offense.

Garoppolo sustained the injury in the first half of their28-21 loss to the Seahawks. According to the 29-year-old signal-caller, he got the injury in the first drive and it worsened as the game progressed, eventually forcing him to sit out the whole second half.

With Jimmy G. unable to play, Lance got the opportunity to take over and proved himself capable, finishing with 157 yards on a 9-of-18 pass completion rate for two touchdowns.

However, while Shanahan would want to give Lance more time to get acclimated to their offense, he admitted they no longer have that luxury as Garoppolo is expected to be out for some time.

“Hopefully Jimmy's better and (the injury is) not as bad as we think. But Trey is here for a reason. We want to give him a little time. We want him to be fully ready, but you don't always have that luxury,” the 49ers coach said, per Tim Kawakami of The Athletic.

Jimmy Garoppolo is set to have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of his injury, but it is unlikely for him to get back and play in the next couple of weeks. Considering that, the 49ers will now lean on Trey Lance to fill the void left by their starting QB.

Lance has yet to start a game for the 49ers, but given the urgency, he will have to learn by experiencing things firsthand.

Kyle Shanahan will have his concerns, but as he mentioned, they just don't have that luxury anymore.
