As the San Francisco 49ers continue to prepare for their upcoming Week 5 showdown with the Arizona Cardinals, there is now a growing possibility that rookie quarterback Trey Lance may make his first career start in this game.

49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a minor right calf injury during his team's Week 4 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He missed the second half due to the injury, as Lance subsequently entered the game in relief of him and finished the contest with two passing touchdowns coupled with a 117.1 passer rating.

Garoppolo missed practice on both Wednesday and Thursday due to the injury. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that with Garoppolo not featuring in either of San Francisco's opening practices of the week, this “bodes well” for Lance's chances of him possibly making his first career start in the team's NFC West clash with the Cardinals.

As it stands, all eyes will be on whether Garoppolo will feature in the 49ers' scheduled practice session on Friday. While 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan noted on Wednesday that there still is a “chance” that the veteran quarterback may start against Arizona, no final determination on his availability for Week 5 has been provided as of yet.

At the least, as Shanahan added earlier this week, the injury is not deemed to be one that will keep Garoppolo out of action for a lengthy period of time.

In the big picture, the 49ers will look to end the Cardinals' undefeated start to the season in Week 5. This divisional matchup will be the biggest test of the campaign to whoever Shanahan elects to start under center.
