Bad news for Pierre Garcon — the San Francisco 49ers have announced that they're declining his option and he'll be released shortly.

According to the NBC affiliate in the Bay Area of California, the veteran wide receiver will lose $8.27 million against the cap in 2019. However, this move will save the team about $1 million, because the 49ers will still be liable for about $7.2 million in dead money against the cap.

The San Francisco Chronicle has more details about this latest move.

“Garcon, the first notable free agent signed by new general manager John Lynch two years ago, was hampered by injuries in both 2017 and 2018 with San Francisco, playing just 16 total games. Over that span he had 64 catches for 786 yards and a touchdown.”

In addition to releasing Garcon, the 49ers have announced that they're not renewing the contract of offensive lineman Gary Gilliam. Gilliam has been with the team for two years.

It looks like, according to the Chronicle, the Niners are trying to clean a little house.

“Earlier this offseason, the 49ers released veteran defensive lineman Earl Mitchell, which saved almost $3 million under the salary cap. Linebacker Malcolm Smith also could be released after June 1, which would save another $4 million. The release of Gilliam and Garcon should put the 49ers at about $66 million under the salary cap as they head toward the free-agent signing period.”

It's unclear what Garcon will, ultimately, do next, or what teams are interested in him if any. However, we will keep you apprised of the details.
