The future of Robert Lewandowski is among the more notable dilemmas that Bayern Munich is currently facing.

As it stands, Lewandowski has one more full season remaining on his current contract with Bayern Munich. Unless he ends up coming to terms with Bayern Munich club officials on an extension deal before the upcoming summer transfer window closes, he would then play the 2022-2023 campaign on the final year of his contract with the Bundesliga powerhouse.

Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga clash against Eintracht Frankfurt, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic opened up to Sky Sport about his aspirations to keep the current German top flight leading goal-scorer at the club and also noted that he is not interested in parting ways with him in the summer transfer window later on this year.

“Lewa [Lewandowski] is of course a very, very important part of our team,” Salihamidzic said. “He's back on track to shoot our team to titles, so it's out of the question at all.

“Of course we will do everything we can to ensure that he stays.”

Overall, Lewandowski earned a start for Bayern Munich in the 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Although he entered the fixture in keen form with five goals scored in his last three appearances in Bundesliga play, he did not notch a goal in the match despite recording a trio of shots on target.

Following the result, Lewandowski provided his stance on his future with the team to Sky Sport, where he touched on Salihamidzic's notable comments.

“It's the first time I've heard that,” Lewandowski said. “I am very calm. I know that with my experience and my age, I also have to stay very calm. For me, it's important that I focus on my game.

“I know how football looks and how everything works. I am always open, but for me what is important is what happens next week in the next game.”

Sport Bild's Tobi Altschäffl noted today that there has been no “date set” between Lewandowski and Bayern Munich for contract extension talks. They are currently at a standstill over this matter.

While the two sides have not much discussed this dilemma publicly, many current Bayern Munich players and even former club officials have expressed that they much want the Bundesliga powerhouse to go on and keep the Polish international. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stepped down as Bayern Munich CEO in the summer, and he prefers to see the reigning Golden Boot winner stay put.

“I assume the club will try to do that,” Rummenigge told Sky Sport in late January. “They have now basically signaled that they want to extend the contract with the player. I wish FC Bayern and Robert that this marriage will last even longer. Robert is a player who has of course made a major contribution to FC Bayern's great success in recent years. He was in the Champions League, he has now twice been voted the best player in the world.”

For now, Lewandowski sure has his sights set on a possible double with Bayern Munich over the ongoing campaign. The side currently sits in first place in the Bundesliga standings with a comfortable nine-point lead over second place side Borussia Dortmund through 24 total matches played, and it will meet RB Salzburg in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie next month.
