The Chicago Bears were beaten on Monday night by the Minnesota Vikings, and that is not just on the scoreboard. In the fourth quarter, as the Bears attempted a comeback, rookie quarterback Justin Fields went to slide after the end of a run, and Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks delivered an illegal blow to his head.

As you can see from the video, Kendricks goes for the head and is successful. He disregards the fact that Fields is protected as a sliding quarterback and instead delivers a blow that 1960's NFL legends would be proud of. The problem is, this isn't the 60's and there is no longer any place in football for hits like that. With news breaking recently that Phillip Adams and Vincent Jackson both had the degenerative brain condition Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and it is caused by repeated blows to the head.

Kendricks was immediately ejected and that is what needed to happen whether you watch it live, in slow-motion, or sped-up. It was a dirty play that resulted in a quarterback getting hit in the head while he was supposed to be protected.

Perhaps Kendricks should watch the movie Concussion and maybe he will come to terms with the fact that some hits in football are not necessary and it is the act of removing those hits from the game that is the biggest thing anyone can do for the sport. Adding more of them, by default, would be stopping the progress that the league had made over the past decade.
