The Chicago Bears and Ryan Pace began the offseason by stating Mitchell Trubisky would be the starting quarterback.

Naturally, running back Tarik Cohen was as surprised as everyone else when the Bears decided to trade for former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. Cohen said he was “shocked” when Chicago acquired Foles, adding he feels the sense of competition will maximize the players' talents, via Chris Emma of 670 the Score.

Foles has not ousted Trubisky as the starter. But the two will indeed engage in an open competition.

Both quarterbacks offer a different feel. Trubisky has typically had more success in run-pass options and using his abilities as a scrambler. The former No. 2 overall pick experienced some regression last season, averaging just 6.1 yards gained per pass attempt and throwing just 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

Foles, on the other hand, can add another element to Chicago's offense given his proficiency with the deep ball. But he is less mobile in the pocket and has also been plagued by the injury bug in the past. For all the hype surrounding Foles–plus his big contract–he has made no more than five starts in the last three years.

Regardless of who ends up winning the job, head coach Matt Nagy hopes the competition will benefit both players.

Perhaps Cohen could stand to see added competition. The 24-year-old busted out in 2018, tallying close to 1,200 yards from scrimmage ad 6.9 yards per touch. But Cohen had under 700 yards from scrimmage on just 4.7 yards per touch in 2019.

The Bears will indeed need to get the “best out of everybody” on the offensive unit if they hope to make it back to the playoffs in 2020. That includes the springy Cohen, who is hoping for a bounce-back season of his own.
