Ubisoft and Limited Run Games collaborated to give fans a remastered version of Beyond Good and Evil. The Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition was released on PC and on consoles on June 25, 2024.

The Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition features improved performances up to 4K 60 FPS, depending on the platform. It also features numerous qualities of life improvements including autosave, full controller and keyboard & mouse support, and cross-save across all platforms. It even lets you skip cutscenes.

On top of these new features, Ubisoft also added a Speedrun Mode, 20+ new achievements, and an Anniversary Gallery delving deep into the game’s development history and featuring tons of never-before-seen artworks and videos. The special edition will feature a treasure hunt that delves into Jade's story and offers exclusive cosmetic rewards.

Ubisoft says that the treasure hunt reveals more about the narrative link to Beyond Good & Evil 2, showing its commitment to the franchise.

Funnily enough, this remastered edition comes out before the long-awaited Beyond Good and Evil prequel, which has been stuck in development hell. The prequel has been stuck in the pre-production phase and holds the record of having the longest development for a video game.

Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is available on PC through Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and the Epic Games Store, as well as on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and the Nintendo Switch.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft collaborated with Limited Run Games to bring fans a physical version of the game, alongside a yet-announced Collector's Edition. Pre-orders for these will open this July.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still nowhere to be seen

Beyond Good and Evil was released in 2003 to critical acclaim, which allowed the game to achieve cult classic status. It stars Jade,  an investigative reporter, martial artist, and spy hitwoman working with a resistance movement to reveal a sinister alien conspiracy.

Development of a new entry into the franchise started as early as 2008, but the game never launched. Beyond Good and Evil 2 eventually made an appearance at E3 2017, but still, no release date is in sight almost seven years later.

The game's creator Michel Ancel always envisioned Beyond Good and Evil to be a trilogy, but his vision never came to fruition. He would unceremoniously leave Ubisoft in 2020, due in part to allegations of his disorganized management. In 2022, Beyond Good and Evil 2 broke the record previously held by Duke Nukem Forever – the longest development for a video game.

Ubisoft again reiterated its commitment to seeing the franchise fulfill its potential with the release of the 20th anniversary edition, but it's also understandable why some fans would see this as mere lip service. After all, the fact that a 20th anniversary edition came out first before a sequel says a lot about Ubisoft's true intentions.
