The Chicago Blackhawks' rebuild has officially begun. In a wild day of trades ahead of Thursday night's NHL Draft, the Blackhawks dealt All-Star Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators for the seventh and 39th picks in the 2022 draft, as well as a 2024 third-round selection.

But they weren't done there.

Chicago then traded former third overall pick Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens for the 13th and 66th picks in the draft. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson told reporters that he believed it set up the Blackhawks for “future success.”

Of course, this had many wondering about the futures of stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Davidson addressed that on Friday, per Mark Lazerus of The Athletic:

Davidson was asked if Kane and Toews were next after the NHL Draft Day trade bonanza. The Blackhawks executive said that the team was “honest and told them what could happen.”

However, Davidson did say that the team wants the three-time Stanley Cup champions around, citing their ability to help “mold” and “set the bar” for younger players.

But, as the Blackhawks general manager noted, Kane and Toews have to want that. Of course, the possibility of being traded isn't new for either of them.

Both players popped up in trade rumors around the March 21 trade deadline. Both expressed a desire to remain with the team.

The question is, has that desire changed? Are Kane and Toews okay with a rebuild? These are honest conversations that the Blackhawks will have to have with their two stars.
