Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, and his receivers are apparently finding that out the hard way in training camp.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Mayfield screamed at his receivers following a failed scramble deal in practice, a reaction that Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens was completely fine with:
“I don’t know if they responded to him or not, but yeah, I expect my quarterback to get everybody on the same page,” Kitchens said. “That’s what I want.”
This is certainly not rare, as quarterbacks are supposed to be the leaders of their offenses and are expected to keep everyone in check. Of course, there is a fine line between holding everyone accountable and avoiding blame yourself.
That's not to say that that it was Mayfield was doing here, but so long as he is also taking some responsibility for himself if he messes up a play, then his teammates will likely be okay with him reaming them out on occasion.
Mayfield is coming off of a tremendous rookie campaign in which he set the single-season rookie record with 27 passing touchdowns. He also threw for 3,725 yards and 14 interceptions while completing 63.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.7.
Due to an incredibly busy offseason that included bringing in talents such as Odell Beckham Jr., Kareem Hunt, Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson, the Browns have high expectations heading into 2019.
Cleveland went 7-8-1 this past year, marking its best finish since winning 10 games all the way back in 2007.
