The Cleveland Browns have been a massive disappointment this year, and Baker Mayfield's underwhelming play has been a big reason for that.
Eight games into his second NFL season, Mayfield has thrown for 1,963 yards, seven touchdowns and a league-worst 12 interceptions while completing just 58.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 71.3.
As a team, the Browns have gone just 2-6, and while Mayfield's performance is not the sole factor in Cleveland's miserable campaign, it is certainly one of the most significant ones, and it is making him a bit superstitious.
So superstitious that he he doesn't even want to sport a handlebar mustache because he doesn't think he is worthy:
“The original thought for me was to do handlebars, I was undefeated before Sunday with the handlebar mustache,” Mayfield said, according to Marla Ridenour of The Akron Beach Journal. “I shaved it off because I didn’t deserve it.”
Mayfield's facial hair is only the start of the Browns' problems.
Cleveland has yet to even win a game at home this year, is the most penalized team in the NFL and is currently four games behind the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North.
To make matters worse, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been playing most of the season without Ben Roethlisberger and got off to an 0-3 start, are now two games in front of the Browns at 4-4.
With each passing week, Cleveland's playoff hopes become more and more dire, and even with an easy schedule over the final eight weeks of the season, it doesn't look like the Browns' aspirations of making the postseason for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign are going to be realized.
