The Cleveland Browns have the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft as well as a glaring need for a quarterback. Conventional wisdom suggests that they use that pick to get their QB of the future. However, Browns GM John Dorsey did not wed himself to the idea of exclusively taking a quarterback No. 1 overall. In fact, he even admitted that he’ll be willing to entertain the idea of trading the top pick away.

“There’s a lot of things I can do at No. 1 and not just get a quarterback,” Dorsey said per Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk. “My door is wide open if somebody wants to come up and talk to me about a trade, I’m willing to trade. But also I’m going to do what’s best for this organization, and I will do that.”

Apart from the No. 1 pick, Dorsey also said he’d listen to offers for the team’s No. 4 pick, which they acquired from the Houston Texans last year.

It wouldn’t be the most outrageous thing in the world for the Browns to consider trading down in the draft. There does not seem to be a clear-cut top prospect at quarterback this year, with the leading candidates all flawed in their own way. There’s a chance that the Browns can trade out of the No. 1 spot and still end up with the best QB in the class if they pick one a little later.

On the other hand, Browns fans will be wary of what happened the last time they traded down from a high draft slot. They had the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft but gave it up to the Philadelphia Eagles. Philly then used that pick to take Carson Wentz, who has the makings of a legit franchise quarterback.

As Dorsey says, he’ll basically do what he thinks is best for the organization, whatever that entails. But regardless of what the Browns decide to do in terms of draft order, they will still need to hit on those picks, which they haven’t necessarily been able to do over the past few years.
