The Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved on from former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston after they signed Tom Brady to a two-year deal this offseason, bringing a very up-and-down tenure to a close.

Winston's final season in Tampa was capped by a league-leading 30 interceptions, and he led the Bucs to a winning record just once in five seasons, finishing with a 28-42 mark.

But while Winston might not have been the franchise quarterback the Bucs envisioned, general manager Jason Licht refused to declare Winston an outright “bust” (via Jenna Laine of ESPN):

Licht was asked during his pre-draft news conference Thursday if he believes the Heisman Trophy winner, whom Licht selected first overall in the 2015 NFL draft, “was a hit or a miss.”

“We have a lot of respect for Jameis. Jameis was still part of our plan if things went a different route,” Licht said. “We've got a lot of respect for him. I thought he did a lot of great things, and anybody in our office or building would say the same thing. He did some spectacular things for us. I would never say that, personally — and I think I speak on behalf of the organization — that he's a bust. I think he's got a bright future ahead of him.”

Winston could be spectacular at times. He led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards last season and also posted a career-high 8.2 yards gained per pass attempt.

However, the former Florida State star was plagued by turnovers throughout his time in Tampa Bay. Aside from the 30 interceptions, Winston also fumbled 12 times after leading the NFL with 15 fumbles in 2017.

Winston is still without an NFL contract, and he might have to settle in as a backup before looking to get his career back on track. Still, Winston only just turned 26, and it seems there is more in store.
