The St. Louis Cardinals only just got Jack Flaherty back from the IL, but it seems his return may end up being a brief one. On Sunday, Flaherty was making his third start of the season in a matchup against the Cubs, but exited after just 2.0 innings on the mound due to an apparent injury, per Derrick Goold.

Having missed the first two months of the season due to a shoulder injury, it's extremely worrying that it was his same shoulder that was causing Flaherty discomfort on the mound on Sunday.

In all, Flaherty threw 49 pitches across 2.0 innings against the Cubs before his unexpected departure from the mound. He struck out two batters and walked two, surrendering 1 hit and no runs in his outing. He was replaced in the third inning by Nick Wittgren.

Flaherty only made his 2022 debut in on June 15 in a matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Heading into Sunday's matchup with the Cubs, Flaherty had a 7.50 ERA with 4 strikeouts across 6.0 innings of work, having made two total appearances for the Cardinals. He brought his ERA down to 5.63 ERA through his start on Sunday before his early exit.

His right shoulder cost him the first two months of the year, and while he finally returned to the mound just a couple of weeks ago, he could be looking at another stint on the IL, though that's something Cardinals will be desperate to avoid.

Last season for the Cardinals, Flaherty started 17 games, logging a 9-2 record with a 3.22 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 78.1 innings on the mound.
