The St. Louis Cardinals shocked the MLB world when they fired manager Mike Shildt. They then made another bold move by hiring 35-year-old Oliver Marmol to be the next manager. The hiring became official on Monday.

The 35-year-old Marmol is now the youngest manager in baseball since Eric Wedge was hired by Cleveland in 2003. Wedge was also 35 when he began managing, but he was 35 years and 64 days old. Marmol will be 35 years and 273 days old on Opening Day 2022.

Marmol is also the youngest manager in Cardinals history since 34-year-old Marty Marion in 1951. During his introductory press conference, Marmol opened up on his age and how that will impact his job. The new manager is younger than Cardinals legends Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright.

“I've never thought of my age as something that has an impact one way or another, positive or negative,” said Marmol, who’s been in touch with players like Molina, Nolan Arenado, Wainwright and Paul Goldschmidt since his hiring. “When it comes down to leadership and just overall having the respect of that clubhouse, a couple things come to mind. If the player knows that you care, the player knows that you're prepared and you have your thoughts organized when you approach them, and you can make them better, they listen to you. … Age isn’t an impediment there; it's just a matter of preparation and organization.”

Marmol was groomed with the Cardinals for years before becoming the manager. After initially getting picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2004 but then not signing, St. Louis drafted him in 2007. He was a player in the organization until 2010, and then he was hired as a coach in 2011.

Marmol became the Cardinals' first base coach in 2017. He was then shifted to bench coach under Shildt in 2019.
