The St. Louis Cardinals are discussing a potential move with the Colorado Rockies involving third baseman Nolan Arenado, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

Morosi reported the Cardinals and Rockies have engaged in “preliminary” talks for the five-time All-Star, though Arenado — who has a full no-trade clause — would have to approve any pending move:

One source said the Rockies and Cardinals have engaged in “preliminary” trade negotiations regarding Arenado, the five-time All-Star third baseman and seven-time National League Gold Glove Award winner.

St. Louis intends to add one star-level position player before Spring Training begins next month, and Arenado is an appealing option if the Cardinals don’t re-sign free-agent outfielder Marcell Ozuna.

The Cardinals have the financial resources to afford the $234 million remaining on Arenado’s contract over the next seven years, although Arenado could opt out following the 2021 season. St. Louis has long-term payroll flexibility, with only three players — Paul Goldschmidt, Miles Mikolas and Paul DeJong — signed to guaranteed contracts beyond 2021.

Arenado has been made available due to the number of teams still looking for impact players at the hot corner. The Rockies signed the 28-year-old to an eight-year, $260 million extension last February, but they went just 71-91 last season and face a number of payroll concerns this winter. Arenado also has an opt-out clause following the 2021 season.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals have significantly ramped up their activity after a mostly dormant first few months of the offseason. St. Louis traded outfielders Jose Martinez and Randy Arozarena to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for top pitching prospect Matt Liberatore, and it is possible they could flip Liberatore to the Rockies — a team very much in need of young pitching — in a package for Arenado.
