The Boston Celtics had an eventful offseason, which is a bit of a surprise for a team that fell one game short of the NBA Finals.

After going down 3-0 against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics stormed back to even up the series. However, they put up a lackluster performance at home in Game 7 and lost 103-84.

During the second half of that game, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck apparently decided that enough was enough, per The Greg Hill Show on WEEI.

“I sat there the whole second half of [Game 7] and started thinking about [making changes],” he recalled. “Then I took 2 days to think about it and went and met with Brad Stevens and Joe Mazzulla and said we are not bringing back the same team.”

Grousbeck kept his promise this summer. The Celtics traded away long-time leader Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies in a massive deal that netted them 2018 All-Star Kristaps Porziņģis. Next, Boston sent forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for multiple second-round picks.

The front office had one last trick up their sleeve before the end of the offseason. Center Robert Williams III and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon were traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for two-time All-Star Jrue Holiday.

Although the C's were on the brink of making the Finals in back-to-back years, their disappointing exit signaled the need for major change. The Celtics have gone to the postseason nine years in a row now, however, they still haven't won an NBA championship since 2008. In order to finally get over the hump, a shakeup was necessary in Beantown.

Boston will tip off its 2023-24 campaign for Banner No. 18 on Wednesday night against the New York Knicks. This season opener will be the C's first real opportunity to see how their new core will fare versus a potential playoff team.
