Despite initially being open to the idea of returning to play for the Boston Celtics, free-agent guard Isaiah Thomas now believes that reuniting with his old team is no longer possible.

Thomas, in a reply to a tweet by Barstool Sports writer Dan Greenberg, stated that he believes that “it is over for coming back” regarding the possibility of playing for the Celtics.

The 31-year-old point guard hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2019-20 season when he suited up for the Washington Wizards. He was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers during last year’s trade deadline, but was waived and did not play for the team.

Back in December, Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe published a column stating that Thomas could help with the Celtics’ lack of bench scoring, to which the 5-foot-9 point guard responded positively, saying that he could help the team in that department.

But since then, it appears that Thomas has cooled off on the idea of returning to the team where he played his best seasons. During his three seasons in Beantown, Thomas averaged 24.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, six assists, and one steal while shooting 44.3% from the field and 36.8% from beyond the arc. He was named an All-Star twice during his time with the Celtics but was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers as part of the package that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston, a move which didn’t sit well with him.

Since then, Thomas has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, and the Wizards before being waived by the Clippers. The 60th pick of the 2011 NBA Draft said that he tried to make his comeback with the Celtics happen, but for now, it appears that if he were to make his NBA comeback, it wouldn’t be with the team where he played his best basketball.

Recently, it was reported that Thomas will join Team USA for a tournament in Puerto Rico this February.
