The Boston Celtics added a big piece to their roster recently, trading for Indiana Pacers guard Malcolm Brogdon. He's expected to be the star of their second unit behind PG Marcus Smart and Brogdon is clearly happy to be in Beantown.
The former Rookie of the Year spoke to the Boston media for the first time on Tuesday and revealed why it's such an honor to wear a Celtics jersey. Via Keith Smith:
Brogdon on his emotions about being traded to Boston: “My grandfather, who passed away a few years ago, was the biggest Bill Russell and Red Auerbach fan. I love the Celtics. It's honor to put on this jersey. It's a privilege.”
You have to love the family ties there. Brogdon also discussed why he believes joining the Celtics is the perfect decision at this point in his career:
“I'm in my prime. I'm 29 years old. I've experienced winning at a high level … This is everything I've wanted, to be able to get back to this (championship) level.”
Brogdon has dealt with his fair share of injuries across the last couple of seasons, but there is no doubting the type of player he is. The 29-year-old owns career averages of 15.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 4.2 rebounds, bringing an extremely versatile skill set to the Celtics. They definitely need more bench depth and Brogdon has already said he's willing to take on a Sixth Man role next season. That just proves how badly he wants to win a championship.
With the core of Jaylen Brown, Smart, and Jayson Tatum having already gained extensive playoff experience, they're expected to be a contender again in 2022-23. With the help of Malcolm Brogdon, perhaps Boston can go all the way this time around. Only time will tell.
