What has been lost in the shuffle of the Boston Celtics‘ heavy pursuit of both Paul George and Gordon Hayward is the discussion of any contingency plan for the organization.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, if they're unable to acquire Hayward, the Celtics have a formulated a backup plan of going after All-Star forward Blake Griffin in free agency:

If Boston can’t acquire Hayward, Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin could be a substitute in this free-agency plan to sign a star and then trade for George, league sources told The Vertical.

There had been previous reports that Boston had significant interest in landing Griffin in free agency to pair him alongside their two other All-Stars, Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford. However, all of that was put in the background once George indicated to the Indiana Pacers that he would be testing the free-agent market next summer.

Griffin could become one of the most sought out players on the free agent market, as the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, and Miami Heat have also been rumored to have interest in signing him. Don't be surprised if even more teams enter the mix once free agency begins on Saturday.

Despite his well-documented history with injuries, Griffin is still one of the top players in the league when healthy. The 28-year-old is coming off another highly productive where he averaged a team-leading 21.8 points with 8.1 rebounds per game.
