Following a slow start to the ongoing free agency period, the Boston Celtics are now looking ahead to making future moves, which include possibly resolving Marcus Smart's long-term status with the team.

As noted by the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy, the Celtics are well open to signing Smart to a four-year deal extension worth “roughly” $17 million per season.

Former Phoenix Suns executive and current NBA TV analyst Ryan McDonough further notes that the Celtics “appear to be offering Smart the largest possible extension” they can give the guard, which would center on a four-year deal worth a total of $77 million. Thus, this would see Smart make $17.2 million over the 2022-23 season, followed by $59.8 million in total over the remaining three seasons of the deal.

As Murphy added, the Celtics are still awaiting a decision from Smart's agent, Jason Glushon, on whether such a deal may be finalized soon.

As the Celtics are rumored to be in on the possible Bradley Beal sweepstakes next year, this potential deal would not hinder the team's ability to make a push for the All-Star guard, such as via a sign-and-trade agreement with the Washington Wizards.

For the moment, Smart will play the upcoming season on the final year of the four-year, $52 million deal that he signed over the 2018 offseason. At the time, many tabbed the deal as a bargain one for the Celtics, as the versatile defensive talent was going to be making a mere $13 million per season.

Although shooting inconsistencies have often frustrated fans, Smart has proved his worth over the past couple of seasons. He is coming off of a season where he posted career highs in points per game (13.1) and assists per game (5.7). Overall, the guard has earned a spot in the NBA All-Defensive First-Team twice in his career so far.

For now, the Celtics are focused on the upcoming season, where they hope it will not be Smart's last with the team.
