The Boston Celtics were one of the teams who engaged with the New Orleans Pelicans for a potential Anthony Davis trade. There were reports that they were the frontrunners to land the All-Star forward because they have the shiniest set of assets to offer. However, the uncertainty surrounding the future of Kyrie Irving and their refusal to part ways with Jayson Tatum, has made their offers to the Pels limited.

Eventually, Davis has been traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Celtics did their best to try to acquire Davis, but according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the team felt that it never really had a legitimate shot at landing him. Now, they will move forward by building around their young core.

The Celtics, meanwhile, will pull back and most likely build around their young core, with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as the centerpieces. According to a league source, the Celtics never felt like a deal for Davis was close as discussions unfolded this past week.

Back in February, when Davis officially requested a trade from the Pelicans, the Celtics were one of the teams that convinced them not to trade the superstar to the Lakers. Back then, Boston felt that they can pair AD with Kyrie and they had no problems trading away someone like Jayson Tatum. However, a lot of things happened and they now find themselves searching for answers as to how they will contend for a championship next season.

Building around Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and some of their young stars might not be a bad idea for Boston. After all, that group has already led them to the Eastern Conference Finals. Now that they have more experience under their belts, who knows? They might be able to replicate their success in the 2018 playoffs.

Davis is gone, Irving is likely gone. Time to move forward, Celtics.
