Grant Williams proved to be quite a revelation for the Boston Celtics last season. The third-year power forward was a key cog for Boston in what turned out to be a highly-impressive NBA Finals run. At this point, though, the Celtics will need to make a decision on the 23-year-old's future now that he has just one year remaining on his current deal.

Boston did not waste any time in picking up Williams' team option for 2022-23. He's set to earn $4.3 million this coming season, but it seems that the former Tennessee standout is looking for a significantly higher payout in the coming years.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the San Antonio Spurs' decision to sign Keldon Johnson on a four-year, $80 million extension could serve as a precedent for Williams and his negotiations with the Celtics. However, it appears that Boston has no intention of going that high:

Boston found a value deal with Robert Williams III just last August, extending the Celtics' starting center for four years, $48 million plus incentives. Cap experts contacted by B/R projected that that salary range can set a benchmark for Grant Williams' negotiations, but rival executives are skeptical that Boston will be willing to spend much greater a dollar amount on Grant than for Robert.

Based on the above report, the Celtics are looking at the $12-million-per-year range for Grant Williams, which is similar to the amount their paying Robert Williams. If, however, Grant believes that he deserves an annual salary in the range of $20 million — as with Keldon Johnson — then it seems that he will arrive at an impasse with the Celtics.
