On Sunday, the Boston Celtics will retire the jersey of Paul Pierce, a Celtics legend who led the franchise to their 17th championship in 2008. Pierce spent most of his career on the Celtics, in which he led the team in all statistical categories for many NBA seasons. Although Pierce only won one title with the Celtics, the significance of the Celtics title in 2008 was astounding.

After 1986 when the Celtics defeated the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals, the Celtics went into a horrible rebuilding mode. For 22 years, the Celtics would never see the NBA Finals again. Therefore, it was a Cinderella moment with one of Boston's brightest stars delivered a title to the Celtics in 2008. On Sunday, Bill Russell showed his appreciation to Pierce with a celebratory video on Twitter.

The Celtics are set to take on the Cavaliers on Sunday. This is the first time the Cavaliers will take on a team with their new acquisitions, so they will be motivated to start things off with a win. The Celtics, on the other hand, will need to win for their home crowd to commemorate Pierce's contributions over the span of his legendary career. Though for Pierce, this moment is definitely a special one.

Bill Russell led the Celtics to 11 NBA titles during his prime. He is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league's history, and he has the most championships among any NBA player, past and present. For Pierce, this is a tremendous honor to receive congratulations from one of the Celtics' luminaries.
