Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has a stake in Liverpool, and now another person involved with the Lakers could be an owner of Chelsea in the near future.

A group featuring Lakers and Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly has advanced to the next stage of the process to buy the Premier League club, according to James Olley of ESPN. Boehly's group includes Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and British property investor Jonathan Goldstein.

Chelsea is going up for sale because of sanctions on outgoing owner Roman Abramovich for his alleged ties to Vladimir Putin. Raine Group, a New York-based merchant bank, is handling the sale of the club and has taken upwards of 30 bids. They're in the process of whittling those down, likely to a small group of finalists before finally choosing the winner:

The other confirmed to have progressed on Friday morning is the consortium headed by British businessman Sir Martin Broughton, former chairman of British Airways, containing World Athletics president Sebastian Coe and rumoured to involve Crystal Palace shareholders Josh Harris and David Blitzer.

Sources told ESPN last week that Raine were likely to identify two or three bids to be put forward for consideration by the Chelsea hierarchy, excluding Abramovich …

The Rickets family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, is also involved with a bid, though there has been some backlash because of racist comments made by Joe Ricketts in leaked emails several years back. However it appears the Ricketts family is now on the shortlist to buy Chelsea as well.
