The Kansas City Chiefs had a plan to head into the 2019 regular season with Chad Henne as their backup quarterback to Patrick Mahomes. That all changed when Henne broke his ankle and required surgery to correct it though.

Without a backup suddenly, the Chiefs turned to Matt Moore. Moore didn't play in the NFL last year but had a long career before that. So they're hoping his veteran experience can be valuable to the team and they can trust him if he's needed on the field.

To get Moore on the roster though, Kansas City needed to make another move. According to Darin Gantt of ProFootballTalk.com, that move was placing fullback John Lovett on the injured reserve list.

Lovett was an undrafted rookie out of Princeton and was turning heads in training camp. Sadly though, he got injured in the first preseason game of the year.

Clearly, the Chiefs still believe he could play a big part in their future though as they aren't releasing him. Lovett's definitely intriguing as someone that can make waves at multiple positions and proved himself adept in the receiving game as well as the rushing attack, and could serve as a solid blocker.

For now though, all that's on hold. Now the concern is with Matt Moore. The Kansas City Chiefs clearly wanted a veteran behind Patrick Mahomes.

That is understandable because despite Mahomes incredible year, he's still an extremely inexperience quarterback. He's only really had one year as a starter in the NFL so far (this will be his third season in total). Having a veteran behind him to give advice and guide him along the way is a smart move.

It's also important to have a veteran in case of injury. The only other two quarterbacks on the roster were Chase Litton and Kyle Shumar – both undrafted free agents over the last two seasons.

While it's nice to have Matt Moore as a veteran backup in case anything should happen, if all goes right for the Kansas City Chiefs he'll be rendered unnecessary, as they won't need a backup to step on the field (except maybe in a blowout).
