The Kansas City Chiefs coming up short of the Super Bowl rocked the AFC's most notorious powerhouse. Now, the front office has a lot of work to do when it comes to keeping the team together. The Chiefs are in danger of losing one of their best players in free agency.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu is expected to test the open market. After posting a cryptic tweet about replacing him, it seems like he will heavily consider leaving the Chiefs.

After the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game, Mathieu said that he is “hoping” to re-sign with the Chiefs but added that it is out of his control. It would make no sense for the Chiefs to let one of their best players walk in free agency, though the organization's cap situation is very tight.

Mathieu's importance to the team was never in question but it was made obvious once he left the Chiefs' matchup against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Round in the first quarter with an injury. The Chiefs' passing defense was shredded by Josh Allen without him. He led the team in interceptions and plays a lot of roles in Kansas City's defense.

Rapoport added that there is a chance that Mathieu stays, but the amount of work the front office has a lot of free agents to bring back. Mathieu should be among the most heavily prioritized ones given his tremendous leadership and talent.
