The Kansas City Chiefs have won five games in a row, largely powered by their defense, which has turned things around after a rough start to the season. Chiefs star defender Tyrann Mathieu offered his take on the biggest factor behind the defensive turnaround.

Tyrann Mathieu believes the turnaround isn't scheme-related- though that could be a part of it too- but chemistry-related. When the Chiefs allowed 29-plus points in each of their first five games played this season, Mathieu and the rest of the Chiefs gang didn't panic.

It's cool how Mathieu said it was a “total team effort of staying committed to each other.” That sounds like a bunch of guys who really like playing with each other. It makes sense too, because Kansas City was largely able to keep their Super Bowl-winning defense together for the most part.

Whether the biggest factor is scheme-related or something intangible, it's showing up in the box score. Mathieu and the Chiefs have allowed an average of 11.2 points per game during their five-game winning streak. That is a championship-level defense.

If Kansas City's offense can begin to look like the unit from years past, the Chiefs could have something brewing once again in the AFC.
