WTA star Venus Williams hasn't played competitive tennis in nearly a year. That's about to change. In a shocking development, Williams will be playing in the upcoming Citi Open in Washington, per Reuters.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion accepted a wildcard for the July 30-Aug. 7 WTA 250 event a day after announcing she will also compete at next month's WTA 1000 event in Toronto, where she will be joined by her sister Serena.

It's a huge announcement for WTA fans, as Williams has been a beloved player since she turned pro back in 1994 at the age of 14. Williams' last appearance on the tour came in the Chicago Women's Open in August of last year. She was defeated by Hsieh Su-Wei in the first round.

Earlier this month, Williams shockingly announced she would be competing in mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Jamie Murray, brother of three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.

The hallowed grounds of the All-England Club are also where Williams last won a singles match in the WTA. She defeated Mihaela Buzarnescu in the first round of last year's Wimbledon tourney.

After securing a win alongside Murray earlier this month, Williams told reporters, “You never know where I'll pop up.”

She was right, as not many expected her to be back on the singles scene for the start of the summer hard court season.

At 42 years old, it's not clear how much gas Venus Williams has left in the tank. For tennis fans, it might not matter. They get to watch one of the greatest to step on the court once again at the Citi Open.
