Despite most major college basketball conferences cancelling due to the coronavirus, the Big East decided to go ahead and tip on Thursday afternoon, leaving many people sincerely questioning their judgement.

Update: After playing the first half of the first game on Thursday, the Big East finally cancelled:

Most observes assumed the Big East would eventually pull the plug on the tournament, as every other major college basketball league did the same shortly before games were ready to tip. However, despite is seeming as though the game was about to be stopped, officials signaled that it would go on as planned.

While there are no spectators at the game, given the recent scares involving the Utah Jazz, as well as Fred Hoiberg falling ill on Wednesday night (he tested negative), it appears as if cancelling everything was going to be a no-brainer for the basketball-only league. Alas, here we are.

At the time of this writing, there’s no news if this is the last game of the day for the Big East or if the league will finally see the concerns stemming from the coronavirus, cancelling the event as soon as this game ends — or even in the middle of it.

Most people assume, especially at this point, the NCAA Tournament will either be postponed or cancelled; though no official word has come out from the governing body of college sports.
