The world of sports has undoubtedly taken a massive hit because of the coronavirus outbreak that has spread all over the globe. Andy Doch, who served as an executive for the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Oakland A’s and the San Francisco 49ers, admitted that sports has always weathered previous global events that had major financial implications. But, now, it's right smack in the middle of the storm.

“Sports has always been the arm around the shoulder at the end of major trauma,” said Andy Dolich via The New York Times. “Now sports is right in the middle of it.”

For a business driven by paying audiences, the sports world will certainly take a massive financial hit. Major sports organizations have already taken drastic measures as a result of the spread of the virus.

The NBA immediately suspended its season indefinitely last week after the Utah Jazz revealed that All-Star Rudy Gobert was infected with the coronavirus. Aside from Gobert, All-Star teammate Donovan Mitchell also contracted the virus.

There will also be no March Madness after the NCAA canceled the tournament entirely. The MLB is postponing games until further notice, while the NHL, like the NBA, suspended its season. Some sports events, however, have opted to continue the show without fans at the venue.

As much as the sporting world is affected, this worldwide issue is more than just sports. Lives of people across the globe have been affected and thousands have already died as a result of the coronavirus.

There is no telling when all of this will stop. All we can do now is to do whatever we can to prevent the further spread of the virus.
