Jace Prescott, older brother of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, died Thursday at the age of 31. The cause of death was not determined at press time.

Cowboys legend and NFL commentator Michael Irvin tweeted on Dak Prescott's immense loss and the grief being felt by the Prescott family:

The year 2020 has been a year of great loss, pain, and suffering around the world. It has been hard to escape from the all-encompassing waves of death and grief created by the coronavirus pandemic. This death's cause is currently undetermined, but it nevertheless represents yet another profoundly painful moment, one the Cowboys family shares on the night of Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The NFL community and the larger American community of sports fans eagerly looked forward to this particular 2020 draft, viewed by millions in self-isolation and social distancing without having the ability to share the moment at sports bars or restaurants. This was, and is, and always will be, an NFL Draft unlike any other we have ever known, and know it will also be remembered as the draft night when the brother of the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback died.

It is as though nothing — and no one — can escape from the grim realities of 2020, which just keep coming, this time to the Cowboys in a uniquely wrenching way.

The mood in the Cowboys' camp earlier on Thursday night was ebullient. Dallas and Jerry Jones made the pick most of the members of the fan base wanted, snagging electric wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in the first round out of the University of Oklahoma.

Plenty of football fans in the state of Texas saw firsthand how devastating Lamb was at Oklahoma; the Sooners and their offense made life miserable for the Longhorns, winning the 2019 Red River Rivalry and capturing a fifth straight Big 12 Conference championship against the Horns, who haven't won the Big 12 since 2009.

Texan football fans who ride with the Cowboys know quality when they see it; Lamb's selection was cause for joy, but the joy didn't last very long, overcome by the profound sadness of knowing that Dak Prescott lost his older brother.

2020 will hopefully get better soon. On Thursday, it provided more pain on what was supposed to be a night of joy.
