Leighton Vander Esch was unable to have the season he envisioned in 2019 with the Dallas Cowboys due to injuries. After an injury-riddled campaign, Dallas has provided an update on Vander Esch.

On Monday, Stephen Jones — the executive VP of the Cowboys — spoke to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News about the future of the franchise. Among the topics, Jones commented on the progress that Vander Esch has made thus far.

“Once we see him, we’ll have a better feel for it. But he’ll have some limitations up until training camp before we really turn him loose,” Jones said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.

Jones prefaced his comments by saying that the Cowboys believe Vander Esch will do some work in the spring. Nevertheless, they want to be cautious with the young linebacker before they have him return to the field.

The Cowboys selected Vander Esch with the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, the Boise State product led Dallas with 140 tackles and also recorded two interceptions.

As for his second season, it was off to another fantastic start before he suffered a neck injury in Week 7 versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Following a one-game absence, Vander Esch returned to the Cowboys in Week 9.

However, the second-year linebacker would reaggravate his injury in Week 11 and would be shut down for the final six weeks of the season. Given that the injury is concerning his neck, the Cowboys don't want to worsen the severity of it. At the least, there is optimism that Vander Esch will be ready for offseason activities.
