The Washington Football Team struggled to get on the board in the first half on Sunday night. While it's easy to pin the blame on having too much eggnog, it was the tough defense of the Dallas Cowboys that was the biggest factor.

The Cowboys, who scored 42 points, were simply unforgiving on the defensive end early on, punishing Taylor Heinicke and company as if they were terrible gift-givers. Leading the way once again, of course, was star cornerback Trevon Diggs, who boosted his case for Defensive Player of the Year with a historic feat against the Washington Football Team.

In the opening minutes of the first quarter, Diggs intercepted Heinicke's pass to Terry McLaurin to increase his tally to 11 interceptions this season. In the process, he tied the Cowboys record for most interceptions in a single campaign and is now just four more away from beating the NFL record of 14 interceptions set by Los Angeles Rams legend Night Train Lane in 1952 (via NFL).

The 23-year-old Diggs, the younger brother of Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, has been the heartbeat of the Cowboys defense all season long. He had made huge strides since being selected as the 51st overall pick in last year's NFL Draft and is one of the contenders for the Defensive Player of the Year trophy.

It's pretty clear that Diggs has been one of the key pieces to the Cowboys' surge this season and he's expected to play an even pivotal role in the NFL Playoffs.
