Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II recently signed an unprecedented 10-year mega-deal. However, some experts believe the next contract quarterback Dak Prescott signs with he Dallas Cowboys may have a more impact on the marketplace.

NFL salaries have nowhere to go but up. With that in mind, the fifth-year starter turned down a reported an extension offer. The proposed deal included $115 million in guaranteed dollars from Jerry Jones before the July 15 deadline. As a result, Prescott will play the 2020 season under the franchise tag. He'll risk the security while playing on a deal that pays him $31.4 million this season.

Prescott is reportedly looking for a long-term deal that provides long-term security. But he's chasing an annual salary in-between the Mahomes ($45 million) and Russell Wilson ($38 million) range.

The fact that he's willing to play the 2021 season under the tag, too—in other words, bet on himself—lines him up for a potentially game-changing payday in two years.

“Prescott sticking to his guns, virtually certainly getting tagged again…(to the tune of $38M) and then hitting the street 12 months later is a far more frightening sight for owners and GMs than are the gross figures of the $477M Mahomes stands to earn — because it will take him an entire career to earn it and that cost certainty is worth gold in this sport,” writes CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, who believes Prescott will become the highest-paid signal-caller in football.

“True leverage in this league comes from proximity to being able to hit the open market,” La Canfora points out. “Only one has a chance to be trailblazer…when it comes to shifting the NFL's spending paradigms.”

Patrick Mahomes may have signed the biggest deal in history. But Dak Prescott's next contract may have a greater impact in favor of players fighting for deals of their own.
