The Chicago Cubs have enjoyed their Memorial Day against the San Diego Padres so far, with several home runs to their name. Cubs star Kris Bryant got in on the fun in the bottom of the fifth inning with an oppo taco dinger.
The home run itself wasn't all that spectacular given it just got over the basket perched atop the Wrigley Field outfield wall, but it was made memorable by a fan trying to catch it with a full beer. Naturally, there was a big splash that nearly soaked right fielder Wil Myers:
Luckily, the fan still wound up with the ball, but that's quite the waste of a perfectly good beer!
Bryant's homer was the third of the day for Chicago. Javy Baez hit a monster shot over the batter's eye in center that went nearly 455 feet. Patrick Wisdom hit a high, majestic dinger to center as well.
Bryant has bounced back in a big way in 2021 after struggling in 2020. He now has 12 home runs and 36 runs batted in on the season. He's hitting .326 and is one of the top MVP candidates in the National League.
With Bryant putting up huge numbers, the Cubs are currently on a roll as they try to get to first place in the NL Central. They're hot on the heels of the St. Louis Cardinals, entering play Monday just half a game back.
Bryant's play and the Cubs' current standing in the division will make for an interesting trade deadline. The star has been involved in some trade rumors because of his upcoming free agency, but perhaps Chicago will keep him and try to pay up now that he's looking like an MVP again. KB won MVP in 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series.
