The Dallas Cowboys were expected to compete for a Super Bowl during the 2019 season, but they fell well short of that goal. They didn't make it to the playoffs, finishing with an 8-8 record.

For the Cowboys, this is an important offseason because they aren't that far away from competing for a Super Bowl, but they need to make the right moves to make it happen. Let's look at three significant needs Dallas needs to address this offseason.

3. A new Cowboys safety

It seems like the Cowboys have been searching for a game-changing safety for years, and it's not different this season. The team inquired at the trade deadline about trading for New York Jets safety Jamal Adams, so it's clear the team knows they need to find a star to hold down the back end.

Jeff Heath was a solid player, but he is an unrestricted free agent, and it's unclear if the team wants to bring him back. Even if they do re-sign him, that can't be the only move they make. The team needs to go after a player like Jamal Adams or try to get a star in the draft.

2. A cornerback, especially if Byron Jones leave

Much like safety, the team needs to make a splash with a good cornerback signing.  Byron Jones is scheduled to be a free agent, and he is probably going to attract a lot of outside attention in free agency. If the team can re-sign him, they still need to try and make a splash, but maybe not as big of one.

The Cowboys secondary wasn't terrible, but at times they disappeared in big moments, and they need a big-time playmaker that won't let that happen.

If they do end up drafting a cornerback in the first round, they need to make sure it's someone who can play right away.

1. The Jason Witten replacement

Cowboys fans love Jason Witten, and for a good reason; he was one hell of a tight end for many years, but it's time for the team to find an upgrade.

Behind Witten was Blake Jarwin, who is a restricted free agent. The team should try to bring him back, but in the same role, as the second tight end.

The Cowboys bringing in someone like Tyler Eifert, Eric Ebron, or Hunter Henry would make a whole lot of sense. Even if the Cowboys decide they do want to bring back Witten, that shouldn't stop them from trying to sign a big-time free agent.
