Before the offseason started, the teams that were often included in trade rumors were the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers and L.A. Clippers, among others. But in the past couple of weeks, the Houston Rockets came from nowhere and became serious contenders for some of the big name players available in free agency or through trades.

They were able to capitalize on their sudden rise as a potential destination for some stars, as they have recently completed a trade to acquire Chris Paul, and are also reportedly in the running to land Indiana Pacers star forward Paul George.

The team’s general manager, Daryl Morey, addressed the media after officially announcing the deal with the Clippers, and described the franchise’s move as part of a weapons race, and that they feel they are now closing the gap between them and the other juggernaut teams in the league today.

Now with Chris Paul on board, the Rockets will have a very talented backcourt, as he will be paired together with their franchise player, James Harden. Despite giving up a total of seven players in exchange for the perennial All-Star point guard, the team will have two legitimate superstars to build around on, and possibly bring in another one to further boost their chances of competing against the likes of the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors, and maybe even win a championship.
