Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts left Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals after getting hit on the hand with a 97.9 mph fastball thrown by Dan Altavilla, according to Noah Camras of Dodgers Nation.

Mookie Betts stayed on the ground in pain after getting hit by the pitch, and Miguel Rojas eventually replaced him as a pinch runner. The Dodgers went on to win the game 3-0 over the Royals to win two out of three in the series, but the status of Betts looms large.

After the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Betts suffered a fractured left hand, and while he will not require surgery, it will take time to heal, according to Kirsten Watson of the Dodgers. Luckily, Dave Roberts said that it is not a season-ending injury.

The Dodgers lineup is deep, and likely will be fine while Betts misses some time, but it will break up the trio he forms with Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman for the time being. Players like Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez have provided supplemental offense outside of that dynamic trio, and they will have to keep producing while Betts is out. It will be worth monitoring further reports on Betts to see the estimated amount of time that he will miss.

Dodgers catch two bad breaks with Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Mookie Betts injuries

Coming into this weekend's series against the Royals, the Dodgers have not had too much bad luck with injuries. However, two bad breaks happened fast with Yoshinobu Yamamoto landing on the IL after leaving Saturday's game with a strained triceps, and Betts leaving Sunday's game after getting hit on the hand.

Prior to this weekend, the Dodgers had been dealing with injuries to Max Muncy and pitchers like Bobby Miller in addition to the injuries to Tony Gonsolin, Clayton Kershaw and Dustin May that date back to 2023. All in all, it could have been worse for the Dodgers, although Max Muncy's absence is significant. Betts missing time is obviously a huge blow in comparison.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto's injury is very significant as well, as he along with Tyler Glasnow and Gavin Stone formed a formidable top three of the rotation. Yamamoto is said to be going under testing to determine the recovery timeline after dealing with triceps tightness. Hopefully he is not out long and this does not impact the potential rotation for Los Angeles come the playoffs.

Hopefully for Betts' case, the Dodgers are able to get him back into the lineup in the latter part of the season to get him reacclimated to facing major league pitching. If they can do that, there should be a minimal impact on Los Angeles' chances in the postseason.

Although the Dodgers came away with a series win, the injuries to Betts and Yamamoto are more important for the bigger picture.
