The Philadelphia Eagles' triumphant return to the playoffs struck some much-needed pride within the city after a miserable 2020 season. Jalen Hurts was the team's starting quarterback but it wasn't clear just how beneficial he was to their success.

The 23-year-old Hurts played well but not outstandingly well, which invited such ideas as trading for Russell Wilson, even though it doesn't seem super likely. The Eagles' passing offense wasn't very good scoring-wise, though it also avoided turnovers at a respectable rate.

As the Eagles' front office peruses talent at the scouting combine — using some tactics such as a mini basketball hoop shootout in order to get to know players like quarterback Sam Howell — general manager Howie Roseman made it clear that Hurts is their guy moving forward at the quarterback spot.

Hurts' production didn't blow anyone away but it was good enough to lead an offense that was above-average in scoring. He threw just 16 touchdowns in 15 games while racking up 3,144 passing yards. He had a very strong season on the ground, rushing for 784 yards and 10 touchdowns, which tied for the sixth-best mark in the NFL and the most by any quarterback by a sizable margin.

The Eagles' offense was one of the better units thanks to Hurt's dual-threat style of play and confidence in his first year as a starter. But his shortcomings were fully exposed in the Wild Card round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His deficiencies were far from the only reason the Eagles got dumped out of the playoffs easily but they were certainly one of them.

Philadelphia will have to get more out of Hurts in order to become Super Bowl contenders again.
