The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Jets with quarterback Gardner Minshew II at the helm. Minshew looked very capable in leading the Eagles to a win, prompting a media frenzy of fans and pundits questioning whether Minshew should have been the starter from the beginning over Jalen Hurts. Former NFL wideout and ESPN radio talk show host Keyshawn Johnson sounded off on the QB battle between Hurts and Minshew.

Keyshawn Johnson is right. The Eagles do seem to have a weird fascination with the backup quarterback, though to be fair, a fan base that wins a Super Bowl with a lovable second-stringer is going to see those same qualities in other lovable backups, such as Gardner Minshew.

That's what seems to be happening with Jalen Hurts right now, as alluded to by Johnson. Philadelphia sports talk radio is spewing about how Minshew should be the guy over Hurts when Hurts is the man who got the Eagles to where they are right now. Not only that, but head coach Nick Sirianni already said who the starter is.

As Johnson says, the Eagles didn't bring Gardner Minshew in to challenge Hurts for the starting job. They brought him there to be a capable backup signal-caller.

Johnson is right. The Eagles should continue to let Hurts develop. They should let him prove that he can bounce back from a rough performance.

And worst case, the Eagles have a capable backup in Minshew if Hurts falters or is injured for longer than people think. That's a better QB situation than most NFL teams can say.
