USA vs. Grenada preview & predictions

The USMNT is entering this game with a ton of confidence. Not only have they secured a place in Qatar come the end of the year, but their two friendlies versus good teams from different regions produced great results. Sure, a 0-0 draw versus Uruguay might not look the part, but it is important for the US to go toe-to-toe with such teams, as they will be in their way when the World Cup rolls around.

The first friendly was the best part of their last couple of weeks, as a resounding 3-0 victory over Morocco, a good African team, showed that there is hope these kinds of teams can be beaten by the Americans. Thus, we can definitely say that it was a good period for the USMNT, especially as they prepare for this pivotal World Cup.

Of course, playing against Grenada is not the preferred choice of the US team. Truth be told, this will likely be a stronger training session for the USMNT boys, with the possibility of playing some guys who have not seen many minutes.

However, it can still be a good test of concentration, consistency, and motivation to play a team like Grenada. Every player wants to play against the best, just like every fan of any team wants to see his or her team beat the best, but sometimes it is also about getting the result and establishing a winning mentality through these kinds of games. Grenada might not be the best team in the world, far away from it, but if the team is not on their alert, they can surprise anyone. Just ask El Salvador, which had to save a point versus Grenada in the dying minutes.

In terms of team news, it is difficult to see what direction coach Gregg Berhalter wants to take in this game. The eleven he has preferred up until now included guys like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Walker Zimmerman, but he might look to give the younger players some chances in this game. Guys like Malik Tillman, Luca de la Torre, Erik Palmer-Brown, and Joe Scally might get the nod to start.

Again, it is difficult to say as of right now, but that would likely be the better way to go for Berhalter. He would have a clear image of who to take to Qatar and who he can depend on when the competition rolls around. It would be somewhat wasteful to play guys like Pulisic here, as the risk of injury is too great for the stature of this competition.

On the other hand, Granada will likely play the same way they played in the game versus El Salvador. The only significant change is Paul Kwesi being suspended, but the rest of the roster is or should be available. The key players will be Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong, who scored against El Salvador last time out, and Jamal Charles, who has 14 goals in 28 caps for the Grenadian team. It will be most interesting to see how the team plays and whether they attack from the first minute hoping for a miracle, or play tactical and try to exploit US mistakes.

As for the prediction, it should be an easy win for the US. They are a much better side and should dominate the game, even if the younger guys that take the field. Still, if there are lapses of concentration, they could be punished, so coach Berhalter will need to motivate his guys to win the game and establish winning consistency. If Grenada wins, it will be a huge upset and Berhalter will need to get answers out of his guys as to why it happened.

However, by all tangible metrics, this USA team is much better, so it really should be a dominant, standard win for USMNT.
