USA vs Uruguay preview & predictions

This is one of the biggest tests the US will have before the World Cup starts later this year. Right now, they have just Grenada and El Salvador scheduled after Uruguay and before they play either Ukraine or Wales on the first matchday of the 2022 World Cup. Uruguay is a massive team and probably the third-best squad coming out of South America, so it will be a massive test for the US team. It is exactly these kinds of games that define teams and generations. Even if it is a friendly, the USMNT should play with intensity like it is the World Cup. Winning against Morocco, one of the best African teams did a lot of good for the confidence of the team, but playing well here would be a great sign for US' chances in the World Cup.

Uruguay easily beat Mexico and they are scheduled to play Iran after they play the US. Their first game in the World Cup will be against South Korea, so playing the US, a team with a similar skill level is a smart decision for the Uruguayan team. They are filled with talent and this is probably the last chance for some of their older guard to make a massive splash at an international tournament. Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez, Diego Godin, and many others that are still playing for Uruguay, will need to prepare a lot to play well in the tournament, so playing against a good side like the US will be a good test to see how prepared they are for the challenges of the World Cup. There is no doubt in their quality, but the fitness level will definitely be tested, especially against the young USA.

When it comes to expected lineups and team news, the USMNT is expected to line up very similar to the way they played versus Morocco. While the US's best player is Christian Pulisic, the midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Brandon Aaronson, and Yunus Musah is what impressed people the most. Their ability to control possession, combined with the attack managing to get ten out of eleven shots on target, was great to see for USMNT fans. Also, the defensive stability shown by Walker Zimmerman and Aaron Long was also top-notch, and the same will be expected or at least desired out of this game.

In terms of Uruguay, they will also line up similar to their game versus Mexico. The US is a similar team that comes from the same region and since it worked so well in the first game, the Uruguayans will likely not change formation or gameplan. It will be a mix of experience with Cavani, Vecino, and Coates, and youthfulness, with Valverde, Nunez, and Araujo. Araujo was especially impressive, even though he is generally better playing center of the defense, rather than on the right. It will be interesting to see whether he stays there for this game.

In terms of a prediction, it will be a hotly contested game. Uruguay is a better side generally, but this youth and energy coming out of the USMNT is not to be underestimated. It really depends on who really sets the tempo, is it the young US players that want to run, or the experienced Uruguay players that want to keep things slow and methodical. It is definitely a must-see game, especially for fans of these two national teams, and there is really no way to predict which team will be on top when the game ends.
